A Brief History of the Fairview First Aid Squad

In 1943 there was only one First Aid Squad operating in Middletown, that was the Middletown First Aid & Rescue Squad (then called "East Keansburg First Aid Squad"). At that time, Keansburg and Red Bank First Aid Squads were providing assistance to the township in answering first aid calls. In February of that year, at a regular meeting of the Middletown Fire Company #1, it was decided that due to the fact that the country was at war, the firemen should take up first aid.

Mr. Robert Van Brunt of the Fair Haven First Aid Squad was contacted and agreed to instruct a first aid course for the firemen. After the course was completed, a group of the firemen decided to organize a First Aid Squad. The first meeting to organize a First Aid Squad was held August 1, 1943 at the Middletown Fire Company #1 Fire House. Members of the Fire Company donated money from their own pockets to provide starting funds for the squad.

The search for an ambulance began and a used Packard ambulance, owned by Lawrence Harbor First Aid Squad, was found. With a loan from the Fire Company, the first Fairview First Aid Squad vehicle was purchased. A local garage allowed the squad to use part of it's building and tools to renovate the ambulance. While all this was going on, various equipment was donated by other local squads and individuals. The Spinosa family loaned the use of their barn for the first home for the Fairview First Aid Squad vehicles until an addition to the Middletown Fire Company #1 building was built.

Since that time, until December of 1997, the Fairview First Aid Squad had been tenants of the Middletown Fire Company #1. In 1997 the decision to construct our own building was made. Our first move occurred on December 15, 1997. At that time we moved to 340 Highway 35, just yards away from the Fire House (actually the same building that had been home to the squad before the Fire Company built it's current structure).

Now we are located at 17 Kanes Lane, off of Highway 35.

The members of Fairview First Aid Squad work closely with the members of the Township's other four First Aid Squads, (Middletown First Aid & Rescue Squad, Port Monmouth First Aid Squad, Leonard First Aid & Rescue Squad, and Lincroft First Aid and Rescue Squad ) in providing 24 hour a day emergency medical care to Middletown Township.
